Why I Love New Year’s

We are wrapping up the year, and for me the best way to put a bow on it is to enjoy some special, lovingly prepared food and take a time out with your favorite people. Whether it’s New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day—or even the weekend after—gather with the people you love, set a beautiful table, and make something truly delicious. It’s wonderful to get the kids involved, like my parents did my entire childhood.

We had a special tradition of inviting our friends over for an entire 48 hours. We cooked together, and no one was too young to make a dish. My dad and Mr. Sondag made seafood and meat, Mrs. Sondag made an amazing chocolate cake, and even our youngest friend gathered his plastic dinosaurs, put them in a punchbowl, poured in his beverage of choice, and named it Dinosaur Punch. Our festive two-day gathering was the most wonderful way to end the old year and begin a new one.

Holiday Strata

Nothing says New Year’s to me like a holiday strata. This one is something I whipped up with Roy, where we added some fontina and gruyere, and it was so good you cannot believe it. If you want to make this version, you could use my holiday strata recipe, but substitute half fontina and half gruyere cheese, then top with a big handful of parm. There are so many other fun spins on strata too. You could make my Chicago inspired Italian strata, Salami and Gouda, or Spinach and Feta.
